ARTHUR EDWARD JOHNSTONE
1.Since first the stars of morning move
Melodic measures high above,
And Eden glowed in pristine flow'r,
Each echoing age its lay has voiced;
Each clime has harked and glad rejoiced
To honor heavnly music's pow'r.
2.The viol's plaint, the tinkling lute,
The sounding brass,the silver flute,
Have blended with the poet's lyre
Till one and all have taken part;
Thus kindling ev'ry human heart
With noble music's sacred fire.
3.From long ere David's harp awoke,
Or sweet Cecilia's message spoke,
The world has sung its grief and joy;
So e'er as future eras dawn,
Rich canticles shall woo the morn
With harmonies without alloy.
